Top AdSense Tips

Thanks to Sharon Housley for this article.

Google's AdSense allows Web site publishers to display contextually
relevant advertisements on their website. If a Web visitor "clicks" on an
advertisement, the Web publisher will earn a percentage of the advertising
revenue generated as a result of the click. Many webmasters have built content
Web sites around the Google AdSense model. In many cases the specific intent
of the webmaster is to profit from Google AdSense. Other webmasters use Google
AdSense to supplement their revenue. Regardless of the webmaster's intent, the
following tips will help webmasters looking to profit from AdSense.

Top AdSense Tips:

  1. Niche Sites

Targeted niche sites that have a clear theme, tend to generate more
advertising revenue simply because it is easier to achieve decent search
    engine placement.

Be warned though, you want to chose a niche where there is a sufficient
    number of advertisements available.

  2. Target Keywords

When determining the site's focus, consider how much the advertisers pay for
the advertisements. If the site is focused on ringtones, like

    Ringtone Central
, the payout per click is going to be very small.
Because ringtones are not high ticket items, advertisers will not spend a
    lot on pay-per-click advertisements.

With less obvious markets, use Overture to determine how much advertisers
pay per keyword. The cost will usually be similar on Google. Search Overture
for a keyword then click "View Advertisers' Max Bids" in the top right
corner. This will show the Overture inventory and how much is paid per
keyword. Because the market has become very competitive, it will be
difficult to rank well in search engines with a new Web site that is
optimized for the terms that have the highest payout. Consider targeting
    terms that are moderately priced.

  3. Aged Sites / Time

Over time, as a Web site is spidered by Google, advertisements will
generally increase in relevance. In general, older Web sites will rank
better in search engines. The closer the advertisements relate to the Web
page's content, the higher the "click-through" the publishers will see.

  4. Coding

In order to minimize a Web site's maintenance, place the Google generated
AdSense code in the Web site template or an "include" file. This will allow
you to easily experiment with different advertisement sizes and ad
placement, and keep the Web maintenance to a minimum.

  5. Tracking Channels

In order to know how effective a specific Web site or ad placement is, use
distinct channels and subchannels within Google. This will allow you to
discern what performs best on a specific Web site. Using channels will tell
you what sites are making money, what advertisements are making money and
what ad position is the most profitable on a specific Web site. Keep in mind
that you should run an advertisement for a full week, in order to properly
test its effectiveness, different days of the week will vary the Web traffic
so comparing one week to another will give the most accurate reflection of
    how effective a campaign performs.

When testing different advertisement sizes, placement or color schemes,
be sure to leave campaigns in place for one week. Different days will often
result in Web traffic fluctuations. Comparing Web traffic week to week will
give a clear indication of what ad formats perform the best.

  6. Integrated Ad Placement

Many webmasters have been successful at integrating advertisements into a
Web site. The easiest way to integrate an advertisement into a Web site is
to remove the advertisement border. This will allow the ads to better
blend with the Web page. Google recommends contrasting the link colors
with the Web site colors to increase click-throughs. It is also suggested
that webmasters randomize the color of the advertisements, so that
frequent users will not naturally "filter" the ads.

    example of integrated ad placement:

    http://www.golf-clubhouse.net
    or

    http://www.security-protection.net

  7. Number vs Value of Advertisements

Up to three advertisements can be listed on each page.

This decreases the value of the advertisements served, so publishers
should cautiously add advertisement units, as it dilutes ad inventory. In
other words you want to serve the most expensive ads at all times.

  8. Hot Spots

Like Web copy, "above the fold" holds true with AdSense as well. This
means that advertisements that appear without having to scroll will be
read more frequently. Hot Spots are areas on a Web page that result in a
higher percentage of click-throughs. According to Google, the highest
paying advertisements are located on the hot spots.

    hot spots map -

    http://www.small-business-software.net/heat-map.htm

Google does not indicate if image advertisements or text ads perform
better, so webmasters are encouraged to experiment with both.

  9. Highest performing Ad Sizes

According to Google the 336 x 280 rectangle, the 300 x250 rectangle and
the 160 x 600 sky scraper result in the highest number of click-throughs.
Depending on the website's design and layout, publishers may experience
different results with different ad sizes, placements and color schemes.
Expirement and track the results for each website to maximize the AdSense
    payout.

    Top 15 AdSense tips

AdSense Tip #1: Find your keywords
Before serving ads on a web page, check its keyword density. A free and advanced tool for finding the most prominent keywords in a page can be found here: SEO Density Analyzer. Copy the most important keywords to a text file ([web page name]-adsense-keywords.txt).
AdSense Tip #2: Improve your keywords
Get keyword suggestions from Overture Search Inventory and from Google AdWords Sandbox. Get new keywords that can help you improve your ad relevance. Enter the keywords from [web page name]-adsense-keywords.txt and save the suggestions to [web page name]-adsense-suggestions.txt.
AdSense Tip #3: Keep your website focused on a theme
Use the keyword suggestions to enhance your web pages and to build theme-based content. And also try to get your keywords into the anchor text of your incoming links as much as possible. Don’t forget that Google AdSense is keyword-targeted advertising: Google AdSense bases its advert topics on your websites content, this means that content-rich websites of a popular topic should attract a large amount of ads.
AdSense Tip #4: Write a new page every day
One of the best tips is to add a new page to your web site every day. The more content you have, the more visitors you will get. Put an Adsense unit on each and every content page of your site. But where? You will find more about that from the next AdSense tips.
AdSense Tip #5: Choose the right AdSense format
Wider formats are successful because the ads are compact, easy to read and are complementary to the content. The top three AdSense formats are:
    1. 336×280 large rectangle2. 300×250 medium rectangle3. 160×600 wide skyscraper
Another successful format is the 468×15 horizontal ad links, that can be placed under your navigation bar.
    AdSense Tip #6: Color tips
When creating your Google AdSense ads it is recommended to use the color scheme and style of your website so that the ads blend in well. Ads without background color and borders perfom better than ads within borders with background color.
    Create a custom AdSense palette:
    * border color = background color of your web site* background color = background color of your web site* link color = blue, color of your links* url color = black, #999999* text color = black, #333333, color of your main content
You can also rotate your color palette: select multiple color palettes that blend with your site to create variety.
    AdSense Tip #7: Position tips
Visitors tend to look at the big headlines to see if your page is worth reading. If you get them interested, they will read the text and look for your navigation links.
Place the AdSense ads in a prominent place around the top/left part of your page or under your headlines, where your visitors are most likely to look at.
If you have an article page with a long body of text, the bottom of that article is a good place for AdSense ads because your visitors read the text and then they want more resources.
AdSense Tip #8: Increase the number of ads
If you have a lot of text on a page, use multiple AdSense units. You can use up to three AdSense units on a page, two AdSense search boxes and one unit of ad links.
Link units allow the user to refine what they’re interested in. So if they may not be interested in specific ads on your page, they might be interested in a particular topic, and by clicking on a link unit and a link in the link unit, they’ll be able to specify that they’re interested in that specific topic and get a lot more options and variety on the ads that might appear.
AdSense for Search allows visitors to search Google.com or your sites (up to 3 domains). You earn money whenever they click on the ads that come up on the search results. If you click the Open search results in a new browser window checkbox in the AdSense for Search settings, you won’t lose your visitors.
AdSense Tip #9: Preview Google ads
You can find out what ads will be served by Google AdSense if you install Google AdSense Preview Tool, a very simple tool available only for Internet Explorer 6.0. Click to advertiser sites without generating invalid clicks, and easily add their URLs to your URL filter list. Because AdSense uses geo-targeting, Google serves different ads for other countries. Instead of faking your IP or travelling abroad to test your ads, use this AdSense tool to see what ads see your visitors from France, Germany or other countries.
It’s possible there are no Google AdSense adverts available for your webpage. Hide Public Service Ads, using alternate colors or images. Make sure you include the image in a simple html file as a link (use target=”_top”). The image size should be the same as the dimension of AdSense units. In the alternate url box, enter the absolute url of the html file.
    Read more about alternate ads.
AdSense Tip #10: What not to do
    * Don’t click your own ads* Don’t ask others to click on your Google ads* Don’t manually change AdSense code* Don’t place Google ads on sites that include prohibited contente.g.: adult sites)* Don’t employ cloaking, hidden text or farm links* Don’t use AdSense ads on the same page with similar adse.g.: Yahoo Publisher Network)
AdSense Tip #11: Show images above or next to your ads
Placing images above AdSense ads is not necessarily prohibited by program policies. However, depending on the method of implementation this could be considered encouraging users to click on ads. So you should include a border line between the ads and the images. Don’t show specific products in your images, in order not to mislead the visitors. Just use generic images that will increase the visibility of your ads.
AdSense Tip #12: Use section targeting
Use section targeting to emphasize some content in your page. On your site, place this code where you want to emphasize.
    Content you want to emphasize.
If you want some content to be ignored, use
AdSense Tip #13: Alternate the colors of your ads
AdSense allows you to have up to 4 color variations for each variable for which you can specify color. You should do that if you put AdSense ads on pages that receive many impressions from the same visitors (for example forums) to reduce ad blindness. For example:
    google_color_border = [”628098″,”628098″,”000000″,”000000″];google_color_link = [”000000″,”BBB90C”,”BBB90C”,”628098″];google_color_url = [”000000″,”628098″,”000000″,”000000″];google_color_text = [”628098″,”628098″,”000000″,”000000″];
    Great for overcoming ad blindness.
AdSense Tip #14: Your Google ads should be visible
Make sure your text ads are visible to the surfers in all screen formats. If you put the ads in a table give sufficient breathing room, i.e. proper cell padding and cell spacing to make the ads stand out from the rest of your content.
AdSense Tip #15: Use AdSense channels
You can categorize the content of your website into channels and then track your performance. This way you can experiment with different types of ads and see which is performing the best. Instead of buying an AdSense tracker, you can enter the most important pages in your site and see how they are doing. Create up to 200 channels for AdSense.

    Bullet Proof Adsense Optimization Tips

Many people were surprised by Ivan Heneghan, who boosted his daily Adsense income from $10 to $1,700 per day.The science website that he was referring to, had terrible adsense placement that used a 468×60 banner at the bottom of pages. Based on my experience, the ad placement will not get much clicks.
However, the science website managed to get $10 daily albeit the terrible ad placement. That means this website has high traffic.
High traffic + Correct Adsense optimization = High income.
Ivan Heneghan shared a few bullet proof adsense optimization tips.Bullet proof Adsense optimization tips
    * Use wide and big ad formats.* Keep ad blocks near to your content.* Blend ad colors into your website.
That’s simple, right? But most web publishers do not use these tips.

Google Adsense Tips, Tricks, and Secrets

I’ve been reading a few forums and blogs about Google Adsense tips lately, and thought it would be helpful to consolidate as many as possible in one place without the comments. I’ve also thrown in a few tips of my own. We start out with some of the basic general stuff and move to the more specific topics later on.Build an Empire? When you’re deciding to become a website publisher you will fall into one of two broad categories:
    * Publish 100 websites that each earn $1 a day profit* Publish 1 website that earns $100 a day profit
The reality of it is, most people end up somewhere in between. Having 100 websites leaves you with maintenance, management and content issues. Having one website leaves you open to all sort of fluctuations (search engines algorithm’s, market trends, etc). You can adapt your plan on the way, but you’ll have an easier time if you start out going in the direction of where you want to end up.General or NicheYou can build your website around general topics or niche ones. Generally speaking niche websites work better with adsense. First off the ad targeting is much better. Secondly as you have a narrow focus your writing naturally becomes more expert in nature. Hopefully this makes you more authority in your field.
If this is your first try at building an adsense website, make it about something you enjoy. It will make the process much easier and less painful to accomplish. You should however make sure that your topic has enough of an ad inventory and the payout is at a level you are comfortable with. You may love medieval folk dancing, but the pool of advertisers for that subject is very small (in fact it’s currently zero).
Once you’ve gotten the hang of how Adsense works on a website, you are going to want to dabble in some high paying keywords, you may even be tempted to buy a high paying keyword list. This does come with some dangers. First off the level of fraud is much higher on the big money terms. Secondly there is a distortion of the supply and demand relationship for these terms. Everyone wants ads on their website that make $35 or more a click, however the number of advertisers who are willing to pay that much is pretty limited. Additionally the competition for that traffic is going to be stiff. So, don’t try to run with the big dogs if you can’t keep up. If you have to ask if you’re a big dog, then chances are, you’re not. I have used a high dollar keywords report from cashkeywords.com and was pleased with my results (see cash keywords free offer recap).

Top 7 Tips To Get More From Your Adsense Program

By now, surely you must have heard about Google’s Adsense program. If not, buckle up and hang on for the ride. 2nd tier affiliate programs are on the chopping block. Google’s Adsense program delivers immediate results that exceed most 2nd tier and many 1st tier affiliate programs in terms of revenue generation. If you’ve been looking for a way to monetize your content site and don’t sell a lot of your own products on the website, the Goodle Adsense program may be worth a peak.
Google’s terms and conditions prohibit me from sharing the performance and metrics that our sites generate with their program, but I have some tips and strategies to share that will help you navigate your Adsense Revenue.
    1. Never click on your own Adsense links. This is theft. Best to set a policy upfront to not allow yourself or any of your staff members or contractors to click on any of your adsense links. You will know if your links are working within 1-2 days after you put them up as Google allows you to monitor your clicks and revenue performance.
    2. Vertical skyscrapers on the right side of your website produce the best results as a generalization. If in doubt, do A/B testing until you discover which banner size creates the best result.
    3. Borderless Adsense web banners produce more usually than those with borders. Blend them into your site. Google allows you to customize your Adsense ads, links, borders, and color themes.
    4. Create Adsense channels so that you can track your results from different sub-sections of your websites.
    5. Get to know high value keywords and don’t be afraid to alter your content a bit to include them. I do not recommend hauling off and building websites for the pure purpose of additional Adsense revenue. Google is smart and they may optimize you right out of their program.
    6. Time to retire 2nd tier affiliate program links that have not paid you more than $100 USD per quarter. Replace this premium space with Adsense.
    7. If your site needs a re-design in order to incorporate the Adsense panel into your current ezine or email newsletter archives — the more pages you have it on, the more revenue opportunity you will have.

Precautions before testing Google AdSense on your website

If you are testing your new website layout, you might be reloading your website pages again-n-again. And if these pages contain Google Ads, each time your reload your page, you make a request to Google Ads Server for a new set of ads.Certainly Google is unaware that you are testing your website and it might even penalize your account for “click-fraud” since the IP requesting ads remains same. And if in the worst-case scenario, you might accidently click on your own ads. And these extra “ad impressions” will also chance your CTR data. One simple way to avoid this serious problem is to remove the Adsense code altogether from your page before testing. But this may not be the best solution as your Google Ads are an important part of your layout. So here are a few simple but effective workarounds:1. Instead of using Adsense code, add a static graphic (jpg image) with the same dimesions as your adsense code. (Google itself provides static images of various ad formats.)2. Modify the value of google_ad_client to something like “pub-googleIamTesting”
    3. Add another line to Google Adsense code google_adtest = “on”; Don’t forget the semicolon.
    4. Though there is no official comment, it is safer to remove the google_ad_channel variable.
Or contact Google Adsense Team with your query. Google folks are very quick to respond.
Google AdSense policies require that websites displaying Google ads be active and not under construction. When your site is complete and active, you may add the AdSensead code.
